1.1 Background of the Study
Indigenous games in Nigeria are a rich part of the country's cultural heritage, often passed down through generations. In Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State, traditional games such as Ayo, Damii, and Ludu are celebrated as key elements of local culture, offering recreational and social value to the communities. However, these indigenous games face the risk of fading into obscurity due to the increasing influence of modern sports and entertainment options. Photography plays a crucial role in documenting, preserving, and promoting these games, providing a visual medium to highlight their significance. This study seeks to examine how photography can contribute to the promotion and preservation of indigenous games in Bassa LGA, Kogi State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Indigenous games in Bassa LGA are being overshadowed by modern sports and digital entertainment, leading to a decline in their practice and recognition. Many of these games lack proper documentation, and there is limited awareness of their cultural importance, especially among younger generations. While there are various methods to promote these games, photography offers a unique way to capture the energy, tradition, and social value of these games, but its role in the promotion of indigenous games in Bassa LGA remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate how photography can be leveraged to promote indigenous games and ensure their preservation.
